Ladies of the Links Featured Player: Marina Alex

Marina Alex was born on August 2, 1990 in Wayne, New Jersey. She attended Wayne Hills High School where she competed in interscholastic golf, winning individual state titles in both 2007 and 2008. Following high school Alex played collegiate golf at Vanderbilt University. She qualified for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur, but failed to make the cut.

As a sophomore at Vanderbilt, Alex was the individual winner at the 2010 SEC Championship. She was twice named SEC Player of the Year and was selected as a NGCA First-Team All-American in 2010 and 2012. Following the NCAA championship in 2012 in which she finished runner-up, Alex finished tied for 27th at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament to earn status for the 2013 season.

Alex competed in seven events on the Epson Tour in 2012, earning two-top 10 finishes with a tie for third at the Challenge at Musket Ridge. Alex mad three starts on the LPGA Tour in 2013, but competed mostly on the Epson Tour-Road to the LPGA, where she finished third in the Volvik Race for the Card. Alex recorded six-top ten finishes and was second in greens in regulation and third in rounds under par. Her efforts earned her Priority List Category 9 for the 2014 LPGA Tour season.

As an LPGA Tour rookie in 2014, Alex made 15 cuts in 25 events and earned just under $225,000. Her best finish with tie for ninth at the RICOH Women’s British Open. Alex posted a season-low round of 67 in the final round of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. In 2015, Alex had one top ten finish, a tie for 9th at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, where she recorded a career-low round of 66. Alex matched that career low round at the U.S. Women’s Open, where she failed to make the cut. The highlight of the 2015 season for Alex was being inducted into the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame.

Alex finished 65th on the money list in 2016 after making 19 cuts in 26 events. She posted a career-best three top ten finishes in a season, including a tie for 6th at the LPGA Volvik Championship. During the second round of the Manulife LPGA Classic, Alex posted a career-low round of 64. Alex finished 10th in driving accuracy for the season, hitting 78 percent of the fairways.

In 2017, Alex had her best season as a professional, making 21 cuts in 25 events and finished 27th on the money list. She posted six top-10 finishes with a career-best tie for 3rd at the CP Women’s Open. Her tie for 11th at the U.S. Women’s Open pushed Alex past $1 million in career earnings. Alex recorded a tour-best two holes in one, was 6th in greens in regulation and 7th in driving accuracy, hitting over 82 percent of the fairways.

Alex reached the winner’s circle as a professional for the first time in 2018, claiming the Cambia Portland Classic by four shots. He first round of 62 in that event was a career low, and the victory vaulted Alex past $2 million in career earnings. For the season she has six top-10 finishes and was 17th on the money list with $901,322. Alex continued to be a master at hitting the fairways, ranking 5th in driving accuracy and 10th in greens in regulation.

In 2019, Alex missed only three cuts in 24 events and finished 37th on the money list. She recorded five top-10 finishes, including a season-best 3rd place at the Indy Women in Tech. Alex made the her first Solheim Cup team and finished with a record of 1-1-2. During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Alex made six cuts in seven events. Her best finish was a tie for 4th at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. Alex continued her stellar driving, leading the LPGA Tour in driving accuracy at 83 percent.

Alex made 15 cuts in 20 events in 2021, finishing 64th on the money list. Her season-best was a tie for 7th at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open. Through April of 2022, Alex appeared in eight events for the year, finishing on top at the Palos Verdes Championship with a final round of 66. The win was her second on the LPGA Tour. It vaulted her to 11th in the CME Ranking and 28th in the Rolex World Golf Rankings. The 31-year-old has 28 top ten finishes and just under $3.8 million in career earnings.
