Solheim Cup 2019: Day 3 Recap

Entering Sunday’s singles tied at eight, team USA played well much of the day, going up 13 ½ to 11 ½. Needing only a half point to retain the cup, and tied or ahead in all three matches, USA failed to close the deal. In a shocking end result, Europe stormed back to take the final three matches to win the cup.

Match 17: Carlota Ciganda (EUR) 1 up over Danielle Kang (USA)

Despite getting off to a hot start winning the first hole, Kang was tied with Ciganda after the 12th. Regaining the lead on the 13th, Ciganda once again squared the match on the par-5 16th. Kang hit a clutch putt on 17 to keep the match square, but struggled out of the bunker on the last, opening the door for Ciganda to clinch the match with a birdie.

Match 18: Nelly Korda (USA) 2 up over Caroline Hedwall (EUR)

Hedwall played in only one of the first four matches, but played well over the first nine, leading 3-up. Korda went on a run to birdie 10 and 11, cutting the deficit to 1 down. After tying the 12th hole, Korda won three consecutive holes and finished the comeback winning on the 17th, two up.

Match 19: Georgia Hall (EUR) 2 and 1 over Lexi Thompson (USA)

Thompson was not at his strongest, almost unable to start due to a back injury during warmups. Despite the injury, she played three through the first eight, up two. However, Hall won the next three to go ahead by one. After a missed par putt on 15, Hall went up two and ended the match with a par on the 17th.

Match 20: Celine Boutier (EUR) 2 and 1 over Annie Park (USA)

A double-bogey start by Boutier helped Park to a two-up lead after four holes. However, Park began to struggle and lost two of the next three holes. After consecutive birdies by Boutier on nine and ten, she had the lead for the first time. A 10-footer for birdie on 16 and a scrambling par on 17 secured the match for Boutier and team Europe.

Match 21: Angel Yin (USA) 2 and 1 over Azahar Munoz (EUR)

Yin got off to her typical fast start and had a huge four up advantage after the front nine.Munoz fought her way back winning three consecutive holes. She was never able to even the match and fell back following a bogey on 13. Yin secured a point for team USA on the 17th.

Match 22: Megan Khang (USA) all square versus Charley Hull (EUR)

One of the best matches all day as both players had a clean scorecard through 11. Khang held the lead for a better part of the match, but Hull took the lead with a birdie on 16. Khang took advantage of a muffed chip by Hull on the last, recording a birdie to earn half point for team USA.

Match 23: Lizette Salas (USA) 1 up over Anne Van Dam (EUR)

Van Dam started very strong, converting three birdies over the first five holes. Salas got behind early after a bogy at the first but played well thereafter, knocking in five birdies. She took her first lead of the match on the 13th and held on after Van Dam missed a match-tying effort from 10 feet at the last hole.

Match 24: Jessica Korda (USA) 3 and 2 over Caroline Masson (EUR)

Masson was in early control of the match, but after failing to convert from six feet on the ninth found herself down one at the turn. Korda went ahead with a chip in birdie on the 12th and never looked back, closing out the match on the par-5 16th.

Match 25: Brittany Altomare (USA) 5 and 4 over Jodi Ewart Shadoff (EUR)

Even through the first four, Altomare birdied the fifth to go up by won. She increased her lead after holing a 20-footer on number eight. She continued hot play with birdies on the next two. Eward Shadoff didn’t have a birdie until the 14th hole, but it was too late, as Altomare also birdied to end the match.

Match 26: Suzann Pettersen (EUR) 1 up over Marina Alex (USA)

Pettersen was one of the heroes for team Europe, going up by two at the sixth and then again on the 11th after making a 40-footer. She sealed the deal in the match and the Solheim Cup with a birdie on the last. Following the match, she announced her retirement from competitive golf.

Match 27: Bronte Law (EUR) 2 and 1 over Ally McDonald (USA)

The competitors traded leads throughout the front nine. McDonald went up first with a birdie on three. Law birdied the fourth and McDonald went up one after a missed putt by Law on 10. After a halve on 15 and a 15-footer on 16, Law took the lead in the match. She closed the deal on the 17th with a par.

Match 28: Anna Nordqvist (EUR) 4 and 3 over Morgan Pressel (USA)

Nordvist took the lead early and really never looked back. She played very clean golf, not recording a bogey on her card. Her three birdies were enough to take down Pressel, who had three bogeys on the day.
