Solheim Cup 2019: Day 2 Recap

The weather conditions were tough on Saturday with cloudy, windy and cold hindering play throughout the day. Both teams battled with the USA winning the afternoon matches to square up the Solheim Cup at 8-8 heading into Sunday’s singles.

Match 9: Morgan Pressel/Marina Alex (USA) versus Anna Nodqvist/Anne Van Dam (EUR)

Just like on day one, Pressel opened the day with the first tee shot, however it was Europe that got off to the fast start. After six holes, the USA was down four. The tide changed as four consecutive birdies on nine through 12 combined with putting troubles by Van Dam out USA up one. A par on the 17th was enough to secure the comeback and 2 and 1 win for USA.(USA 4 ½ EUR 4 ½)

Match 10:Ally McDonald/Lizette Salas (USA) versus Georgia Hall/Celine Boutier (EUR)

The duo of Hall and Boutier thrived once again in Saturday’s tough conditions. Both teams were steady, although it wasn’t until Boutier holed a 10-foot putt on the 11th for the first birdie for either team. After another birdie by Hall of similar distance to go up two, team Europe secured the point after pars on the 16th. All told, there was solid play with a combined total of three bogeys. Europe takes the point, 3 and 2. (EUR 5 ½ USA 4 ½)

Match 11: Charley Hull/Azahara Munoz (EUR) versus Danielle Kang/Megan Khang (USA)

USA got behind early and trailed by four entering the ninth hole. One of the lone highlights for the team with a chip in birdie by Khang on the 12th, however USA was down six. Kang continued to struggle and Hull had the hot hand with the putter. Never a contest, Europe gained a point ending the match on the 15th, 4 and 3. (EUR 6 ½ USA 4 ½)

Match 12: Jessica Korda/Nelly Korda (USA) versus Carlota Ciganda/Bronte Law (EUR)

Needing a point to avoid going down three, the Korda sisters took care of business. After opening birdies on the first two, they encountered a down stretch over the next three. Picking up their game thereafter, USA was never threatened in this one. A birdie from Jessica Korda on the 13th sealed a 6 and 5 win to gain a point for the USA. (EUR 6 ½ USA 5 ½)

Match 13:Annie Park/Amy Altomare (USA) versus Suzann Pettersen/Anne Van Dam (EUR)

Despite stellar play from Pettersen, who recorded five birdies over a six-hole stretch mid-round, Van Dam carded just a single birdie. Neither Park nor Altomare were outstanding, but steady and consistent play ruled the day in this match. USA took the lead on the 16th and secured the victory 1 up after Altomare recorded a par on the 18th. (USA 6 ½ EUR 6 ½)

Match 14: Lexi Thompson/Marina Alex (USA) versus Jodi Ewart Shadoff/Caroline Masson (EUR)

Despite the conditions, this match was loaded with birdies, dropping a combined 11. Surprisingly, Thompson recorded only two of those. Fortunately for USA, Alex dropped a key birdie to even the match on the 16th. After a missed putt by Thompson on 18, Europe failed to take advantage for the win, as Masson failed to convert from six feet.Match all squared.(USA 7 EUR 7)

Match 15: Georgia Hall/Celine Boutier (EUR) versus Angel Yin/Ally McDonald

USA blew a golden opportunity to gain a point and ultimately lead by one entering Sunday’s singles. After a four-up lead on the front nine, Europe stormed back lead by Boutier’s eagle on 14 and birdie on 16. A par on 17 was enough to complete the comeback, wining the match for Europe, 2 up. (EUR 8, USA 7)

Match 16: Danielle Kang/Lizette Salas (USA) versus Carlota Ciganda/Azahara Munoz (EUR)

After struggling for much of the first two days, Kang recorded four birdies in the match. This was key to the comeback after Europe went up by two early on.USA failed to find their rhythm early but had a clean scorecard after the third hole. The 2 and 1 victory evened the Solheim after day two. (USA 8, EUR 8)
