The 2020 Symetra Tour season concluded with the Symetra Tour Championship which began in 2008. This year’s tournament took place at River Run Country Club in Davidson, North Carolina. The four-day event played on a par-71 layout that measures 6,117 yards. Laura Wearn won last year’s event after closing with a final-round score of 67 to overtake Janie Jackson by one shot.
Round 1
Kendra Dalton and rookie Frida Kinhult took the early lead after rounds of 68. They held a one-shot lead over Samantha Wagner. Matilda Castren and Sierra Sims were just two shots off the pace after posting rounds of 70. Janie Jackson, who entered eighth on the money list, was in a group of seven at one-under par. Defending champion Laura Wearn was part of a logjam of seven at even par. Lucy Li posted a one-over 73, while Ana Belac and Kim Kaufman, ranked second and third on the money list respectively, both were at plus-two. Other notables included Ana Redding (three-over), Peiyun Chien (five-over), and Bailey Tardy (six-over).
Round 2
Wearn moved into a tie with Kinhult at the halfway point in her quest to defend her title after shooting a stellar round of 67. At five-under, the duo held a three-shot advantage over Malene Krobell Hansen, who shot two rounds of 71, and Sierra Brooks, who posted a score of 69. Greta Isabell Voelker moved into sole possession of fifth after a round of 72. Marissa Steen and Michaela Finn both finished at even. Janie Jackson was still in the hunt after a round of 74 and was at one-over. Other notables struggled in the second round, including Kim Kaufman and Matilda Castren, each posting rounds of 77. Dalton, who was co-leader in round one, stumbled to a ten-over 82 and was out of contention. Redding missed the cut after an eight-over par round of 80.
Round 3
Kinhult pulled away in the third round as scoring conditions got increasingly more difficult. Her three-under par round put her at eight-under for the tournament. She held a commanding six-shot cushion over Brooks and Wearn. Lee Lopez shot up the leaderboard with a 70 and was seven-shots back. Amateur Gabriella Ruffels posted the round of the day with a 68 and was at even along with Wagner and Demi Runas. Ana Belac fell 14 shots back after a 73. Bailey Tardy had difficulties with a 76 and was at eleven-over. Kim Kaufman shot another round of 77 and was at twelve-over.
Final Round
The day and the week belonged to Frida Kinhult, who got her score to thirteen-under before three bogeys on the back nine. She still won by a comfortable four shots over Demi Runas, whose 66 was the best round of the tournament. Sierra Brooks finished in sole possession of third at four-under. Laura Wearn had another strong showing in this tournament, finishing at two-under after a round of 72.
Jackson and Ruffels tied at one-under and amateur Amanda Sambach’s round of 69 placed her as one of only eight players at par or better. Kim Kaufman salvaged an otherwise bad week with a final round of 68 to finish at eight-over. The win for Frida Kinhult was the first for the 21-year-old from Sweden, who finished the season fourth on the money list with over $42,000.
