Ladies of the Links: June 28, 2020 — a Look at the Remainder of the 2020 Symetra Tour Season
Jun 28th 2020
The Symetra Tour started the 2020 season with a dominant performance by Janie Jackson at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic March 6-8. Her eight-shot victory over Daniela Iacobelli earned her $18,750 and a head start in the Volvik Race For The Card.
After over three months away from the game due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is good news out of the Symetra Tour. The 2020 season will be resumed at the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship at Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan July 24–26.
The 54-hole format on the 6598-yard, par 72 course with a purse of $175,000 is in its seventh year. In last season’s event, Ssu-Chia Cheng out of Chinese Taipei shot a 68 to finish at 13 under par. That was good enough for a two-stroke win over Milagros Chaves and Paula Reto. For Cheng, it was her first victory on the Symetra Tour.
Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour, gave thanks to the partners and host venues for ongoing support during the crisis. Notably, the ANNIKA Foundation donated $50,000 to players on the Symetra Tour who were affected by Covid-19.
The FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship is the first of nine tournaments scheduled for the remainder of the 2020 season, making a total of ten for the year. The Founders Tribute in Mesa, Arizona has been set for August 14–16, two weeks earlier than originally scheduled. Another event that has changed dates is the Four Winds Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, which has been pushed back from July 31 through August 2 to September 4–6.
Beginning in the third week of September, the tour will begin a stretch in the southeastern part of the United States. The Capitol Hill Senator Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville, Alabama kicks off this stretch. The following two weeks the tour makes stops in Florida at the IOA Classic and Symetra Classic from October 1–4. Heading north to North Carolina, the Symetra Tour concludes the season at Pinehurst No 9 for the Carolina Golf Classic and the Tour Championship from November 3-6 at the River Run Country Club.
Although the season has been shortened considerably, the ladies will still be competing for more than $1.5 million in prize money. While top players will still be competing for spots on the LPGA Tour next season, only five players instead of ten will earn cards. Janie Jackson has a solid lead after the first event, followed by Daniela Iacobelli, Lauren Coughlin, Lakareber Abe, and Yae Eun Hong.
We wish all of the ladies the best of the luck through the remainder of the season!
