Ladies of the Links Featured Player: Matilda Castren

Matilda Castren, a 25-year old Finnish golfer, was born in New York City on January 18, 1995. She started golfing at the age of five, and by the age of 16 Castren was a top female amateur, winning the 2011 Doral Publix Junior Classic. In 2013 she was again victorious at the Skandia Junior Open in Sweden and finished second at the Portuguese Ladies Amateur. From 2011 through 2013, Casten was a member of the European Girls’ Team Championship.

Castren attended Florida State University and played on the golf team from 2014 through 2017. She was a dominant force collegiately, winning the Florida State Match-Up and the Web.com/Marsh Landing Intercollegiate in 2014. The following season, she took home top honors at the Jacksonville Classic. Castren’s most successful year at Florida State was in 2016, winning the Florida Challenge, Jim West Challenge, and the NCAA Shoal Creek Regional Championships. Her final collegiate title came at the Clemson Invitational in 2017.

Castren’s collegiate efforts earned her second-Team All-American in 2014 and All-ACC selection in 2014, 2016, and 2017. She set the school record for most individual wins and lowest stroke average. In addition, Castren was a member of the 2014, 2015, and 2016 European Ladies’ Team Championship.

Playing on the Symetra Tour in 2018, Castren struggled to find her game, making only 4 cuts in 15 events for just over $4,000 in earnings. There was only marginal improvement in 2019, making 7 cuts in 13 tournaments, finishing 104th on the money list at just over $9,000. The following year saw better scores from Castren, and by the end of the 2019 season, she tied for 26th at the LPGA Final Qualifying, earning her an LPGA Tour card for 2020!

In only six starts during the 2020 season, Castren did well enough to earn a spot in the field at the 2020 Women’s PGA Championship. After a stellar first round that placed Casten in the top 10, she continued her solid play the rest of the match, finishing tied for 23rd.

Castren entered the field in the Symetra Tour’s inaugural Mission Inn Resort and Club Championship and won the event for her first professional victory. Castren is now #303 in the Rolex World Golf Ranking and has just under $84,000 in career earnings.
