After earning victory at the Symetra Tour Championship last year, Laura Wearn entered 2020 with momentum and looked forward to a big year. The 5’ 9”, 29 year old out of Charlotte, North Carolina missed two cuts in five events this year before this week’s IOA Classic Presented by HomeValue.com. This week proved to be a game-changer for Wearn who earned her third Symetra Tour victory of her career. With the win, Wearn has over $25,000 in earnings this year and in excess of $175,000 for her career.
A relatively late start to the game at age 14, Wearn developed her game quickly and entered Furman University in 2009. She played in nine events as a freshman with her best finish a tie for 25th. In addition, Wearn won the North Carolina Women’s Amateur title and improved her stroke average by nearly a full stroke during her sophomore year, with three of her 23 rounds at par or under. She shined at the Cougar Classic, finishing 10th and the following year, Wearn played at NCAA East Regional, finishing 51st. Laura continued to improve, lowering her scoring average over 2.5 strokes to just over 75 and posting four top-ten finishes.
Additional amateur highlights for Wearn include a second place finish at Carolinas Women’s Amateur in 2010, a runner up finish at Women’s Eastern Amateur in 2011, finalist in the Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship in 2012, and participant in the US Women’s Amateur Championship in 2013.
Wearn began her professional career in 2014 and missed 11 cuts in 17 events. Although she struggled much of the season, Wearn had a top-ten finish at the Credit Union Classic. After playing in just one event in 2015, Wearn rallied, making 12 of 20 tournament cuts in 2016. In addition, Wearn cracked the winner’s circle at the Gosling’s Dark’n Stormy Classic and earned over $30,000 for the season.
In 2017, Wearn make 18 cuts in 21 events and finished in the top ten twice. Her earnings of over $34,000 placed her 21st on the Symetra Tour money list. Although recording two more top ten finishes in 2018, Wearn had somewhat a down year, finishing 41st on the money list. Missing nearly half her cuts in 2019, Wearn salvaged the season with a victory at the Symetra Tour Championship, finishing with over $54,000 for the year.
Currently 7th on the 2020 Symetra Tour money list, Laura Wearn has a good chance to earn status on the LPGA Tour for 2021.
