Lakareber Abe is relatively new to the professional golf scene with limited success to this point. She has a solid showing in her only event on the Symetra Tour this season, and is tied for third for Volvik Race For the Card. Likely not a household name yet for most, here’s a little background on this potential rising star.
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Abe began playing golf at the age of nine. She attended the Jim McLean Junior Academy in Fort Worth, Texas. Abe became a standout golfer by 2013 finishing among the best in numerous amateur events and was Rolex Junior All-American. In addition, Golfweek ranked Abe third best recruit for 2014.
Attending Alabama to play for the Crimson Tide golf team, Abe was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2014-2015. She was second on the team in scoring average and had five top-20’s and a top five finish at The Landfall Tradition. She started her collegiate career with a bang, firing a three-under 69 at the Mason Rudolph Championship.
The following year Abe finished ranked 25th in the country by Golfweek and was 2016 Third Team All-American and second team All-SEC. She won the individual title at the Mason Rudolph Championship and helped Alabama claim the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic by taking down Lydia Choi in the championship match. Abe finished the season ranked third on the team in scoring and paced the team in top-five finishes with four.
As a junior in 2016-2017, Abe was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the second straight season. One again having success at the Mason Rudolph Championship, Abe finished fourth after a stellar final round of 63. She finished runner-up to Liz Murphey and finished under par in six tournaments including the first two of the season. Abe struggled to a tie for 45th to start the spring season but bounced back with a one-under par for a 12th-place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic.
During her senior season, Abe earned second-team All-SEC, finishing fourth on the team with a 73.8 scoring average. Always performing well at the Mason Rudolph, Abe finished eighth at six-under par. At the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Abe finished sixth overall and low scorer for Alabama.
Abe turned professional in 2018 and made seven cuts in 14 events, ranking 83rd on the money list with $10,318 in earnings. Playing in more events last season, Abe had about the same deal of success, missing ten cuts in 22 events for $13,700 and 89th on the money list. He tied for third at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic March 6 of this year could be the boost Abe needs to jumpstart her professional career. The question remains for all when golf and life as we knew it returns to normal.
